GO FOR THE GREEN! LOS CABOS’ EIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
GOLF COURSES RANK AMONG THE BEST
Los Cabos, Mexico (April 1, 2005) -- Los Cabos, which
was once little more than a sleepy fishing village and a well-kept secret
among the rich and famous, has quickly become the most popular vacation
destination in all of Mexico. Its rich waters have made it the number one
choice for anglers and divers alike; and its desert landscapes and
dramatic rock formations have rendered it the preferred playground for
outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Now, with an array of premium
courses to add to its long list of attractions, Los Cabos is quickly
becoming one of the world's favorite golf destinations.
Cabo del Sol Ocean Course
Jack Nicklaus, the designer of the Ocean Course at
Cabo del Sol, calls it “the best piece of golf property in the
world.” Golf Magazine calls it one of the “Top 100 Courses In The
World,” and Pacific Golf Magazine calls it “one of Nicklaus’ finest
creations.” The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol is a par 72, 7,037-yard
beauty, with views of the Sea of Cortes from many of the holes. The
three famous finishing holes are among the most impressive worldwide.
At the par three 17th, the golfer is faced with a 178-yard shot over
sandy beach and rock outcroppings to a tiny green framed by bunkers
on one side and a drop to the ocean on the other. The finishing hole,
guarded by desert and cactus on the right and rock cliffs leading to
the sea on the left, is modeled after the 18th at Pebble Beach.
Cabo del Sol Desert Course
This 18-hole desert course is Tom Weiskopf's first
in Mexico. It is spread out over 140 acres of gently rolling desert
terrain and provides sweeping ocean views. The course's large landing
areas ensure a pleasant game for players at all levels.
Palmilla Golf Club
One of the first resort hotels built in Los Cabos,
the Palmilla caught the eye of developer Don Koll in the
mid-eighties. He saw the potential for a golf resort and began the
process of constructing the links. When the Palmilla Golf Club opened
in 1992, it was Los Cabos’ first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course and
it garnered rave reviews in the golf world. The par
72 course features 3,337 yards for the Arroyo Nine
and 3,602 yards for the Mountain Nine. Several holes skirt the Sea of
Cortes; others take players through rough looking mountain terrain.
The 14th hole here is considered one of the world’s most beautiful
golf holes. It’s a force carry from the hillside tee boxes to an
island. From there, players line up on a green set on the side of a
steep arroyo. The hole opens up to spectacular vistas and seems a lot
longer than it plays. Also getting rave reviews is the Jack Nicklaus
Ocean Nine at Palmilla Golf Club, part of the 900-acre Palmilla
resort. This par 36, 3,464-yard layout features a variety of scenic
holes, many with stunning views of the Sea of Cortes.
Cabo Real
This Robert Trent Jones II-designed course is the
centerpiece of the Cabo Real resort development, which also includes
five luxury resort hotels. An 18-hole par 72 that stretches over
7,000 yards, the Cabo Real course rises dramatically from the surf
before winding into the mountains above. Noted golf architect Jones
set up Cabo Real to be a real test for low handicappers, but with
multiple tees it is fun for players of any level. While the first six
holes are in mountainous terrain, others skirt the shore. Rolling
greens and strategically placed bunkers on narrow terrain work their
way up to the sixth tee, 460 feet above sea level. Stronger players
may be caught overshooting the 12th hole, which sits high on a mesa
facing the sea. The most celebrated hole, the 15th, sits right on the
beach between the Melia Cabo Real Golf & Beach Resort and Las
Ventanas al Paraiso.
Eldorado Golf Course
About three miles south of Palmilla lies the par
72 Eldorado. Another picturesque addition to the Los Cabos golf
scene, this 18-hole course was recently purchased by Discovery Land
Company and will be redesigned to incorporate a first-class real
estate development into the landscape. The course will remain open
for public use through April 2005.
Raven Golf Club (formerly Cabo San Lucas Country
Club)
This par 72 masterpiece sits on the high ground
overlooking the famous El Arco, the Sea of Cortes, the town of Cabo
San Lucas and the Pacific Ocean. The world-renowned Dye Design team
took full advantage of the natural terrain in laying out this 18-hole
championship track. Highlights include the fifth hole, with its small
green surrounded by sand traps and positioned just to the left of a
lake and the 384 yard 15th, which proves that a hole need not be long
to be challenging. The par five 16th is a legendary left to right
dogleg with an undulating, elevated green.
Querencia Golf Course
Designed by Tom Fazio, the Querencia is the first
completely private course in the Los Cabos area. Querencia embodies a
championship 18-hole course, a nine-hole short course plus a
state-of-the-art practice facility and
/more…
a private 26,000 square-foot clubhouse with
incredible views of the Sea of Cortes. Known as a “village with
private homes and villas but with the amenities of a resort,” the
complex occupies 840 acres of hillside between Palmilla and Costa
Azul, in the Corridor near San Jose del Cabo.
Mayan Palace Golf Los Cabos
(Previously the San Jose Municipal Golf Course)
This nine-hole 3,141-yard course was originally
built by the Mexican government's FONATUR development agency and sold
to the Mayan Palace Beach and Golf Resorts Group in April 2004.
Designed for intermediate and beginning golfers, it is a great family
destination. It is beautifully maintained and affordable. The 7th
hole offers a wonderful view with the ocean on your left and
mountains facing you as you approach the green. There's a large lake
at the bottom and to the left of the green and a lateral sand trap at
the back of the green challenging overachievers. The ninth is a good
finishing hole with a wide sloping fairway with sand traps to the
top, right and bottom of the green.
There are four more new courses already on the drawing
boards. The mega Puerto Los Cabos Community development just northeast of
San JosÈ del Cabo at the start of the East Cape is carving out two
18-hole courses, designed by Jack Nicklaus and the other by Greg Norman.
Construction was started on the first in late 2004. At the other end of
Los Cabos near Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific side, The Cabo Pacifica mega
development will soon be launching two more championship courses
dramatically increasing the total golf yards in Los Cabos, which at last
count was 56,034 with 144 challenging holes.
Families, honeymooners, mature travelers, golfers,
eco-tourists, artists, photographers, sightseers and others find what
they are looking for when they visit Los Cabos. Located at the southern
tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos offers travelers an exotic
escape within easy reach of most U.S. cities.

and Sacramento, California; Houston and Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Chicago,
